Advanced Manufacturing programs will teach about various forms of additive manufacturing including 3D printing.  This introduces students to the attributes of localized manufacturing and use of sustainable materials including recyclable and compostable filament. Advanced Manufacturing programs incorporate instruction such as the geometry, chemistry, and physics associated with creating 3D objects as well as computer science integration for designing and rendering 3D models.

 

Programs highlighting Sustainable Agriculture will teach about the many sustainably powered agricultural techniques and designs used within both rural and urban developments.  This introduces students to technologies such as hydroponics, aquaponics, and aeroponics, as well as other traditional and advanced horticultural methods. Examples of instruction will include the engineering behind designing small and large-scale systems as well as the science behind how to use these techniques within any environment.

 

Renewable Energy programs will teach about technologies such as solar energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, biomass, hydroelectricity, alternative fuels, and fuel cells. This introduces students to the science behind these various forms of energy, how they are produced, and what natural resources they use. This instruction will integrate subjects such as the mathematics necessary to calculate watt-hours, power production, energy demand, and the probability of available resources at a given time.

 

Computer Science programs will include topics such as coding, virtual and augmented reality, artificial intelligence, automation, and hardware and software integration.  These topics will introduce students to technologies and programming that will prepare them for new, high-tech careers. Examples of instruction will include the mathematics needed to calculate vectors and algorithms and the engineering needed to develop hardware capable of processing these tasks.

Virtual and Augmented Reality

Virtual and augmented reality can be used to create immersive experiences for high-tech skills development. Growing Gears integrates these technologies into technical trainings and programs to engage interest and enhance learning and skills retention. Pictured is a computer-generated 3D model showing the geological structure of the Earth. This example shows how augmented reality can be used in conjunction with mobile devices, even for informal interactive experiences.

Programming and Robotics

Today's machines are increasingly integrated with automation. Computer programming enables these machines to carry out specific assignments and complete complex tasks. At Growing Gears, we offer technology programs that range from coding and app development to programming simple robotic movements and working with robots that feature artificial intelligence. Utilizing robotics is an innovative way to physically interact with the computer programs they develop.

Video: 3D Modeling Program

This video shows one of our 3D modeling programs. This program integrates the use of green technologies such as solar power and indoor agriculture. The program highlights solar electricity using our interactive book, Solar Power, which enables the design of industry grade green projects. The training includes 3D computer modeling lessons to strengthen computer literacy skills and solar kits for hands-on experience.

Video: 3D Green Community

This video shows two examples of a collaborative project for a 3D Green Community. Participants were each assigned a parcel of land within a virtual community and then designed energy efficient, solar powered homes with attached greenhouses. Each participant built their home according to the solar orientation of their assigned location within the neighborhood. The homes were then assembled into the virtual community, which included shared spaces such as a community pool, exercise area, orchard, and wind energy.

3D Model Examples

Here are photos of some of the 3D models built during the 3D Green Community Project. Displayed as part of the virtual community in the video above, each home features a solar electric system, skylights, greenhouses, and other sustainable attributes. 3D modeling allows for creative and exploratory alternatives to traditional design methods. Using the interactive book Solar Power enabled the home designs to use solar energy effectively.  

Video: Touchscreen Interfaces

We integrate touchscreen interfaces into our instructional designs and labs. This video shows how touchscreen technology has advanced to respond very quickly to interaction and can be used by multiple people at the same time. When integrated, touchscreens can increase the retention of computer skills, collaboration skills, and enhance abilities to apply science and technology.
